How Long Do Cosmetics Last?

By User ImageAdmin On July 30, 2008 NO COMMENTS

You may not be able to use eye make-up, such as mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow for as long as other products. This is because of the risk of eye infection. Some experts recommend replacing mascara three months after purchase.

If mascara becomes dry, throw it away. Don’t add water or, even worse, saliva to moisten it. That will bring bacteria into the product.

You may also need to watch certain “all natural” products that contain substances taken from plants. These products may be more at risk for bacteria. Since these products contain no preservatives or have non-traditional ones, your risk of infection may be greater.

If you don’t store these products as directed, they may expire before the expiration date. For example, cosmetics stored in high heat may go bad faster than the expiration date. On the other hand, products stored the way they should be can be safely used until they

What Are Hypoallergenic Cosmetics?

By User ImageAdmin On July 30, 2008 NO COMMENTS

Hypoallergenic (hy-po-al-ler-gen-ic) cosmetics are products that makers claim cause fewer allergic reactions than other products. Women with sensitive skin, and even those with “normal” skin, may think these products will be gentler.

But there are no federal standards for using the term hypoallergenic. The term can mean whatever a company wants it to mean. Cosmetic makers do not have to prove their claims to the FDA.

Some products that have “natural” ingredients can cause allergic reactions. If you have an allergy to certain plants or animals, you could have an allergic reaction to cosmetics with those things in them. For example, lanolin from sheep wool is found in many lotions. But it’s a common cause of allergies too.

Anti-Aging Energy Boosters

By User ImageAdmin On July 19, 2008 NO COMMENTS

Remember when you were a child and you had to get booster shots to protect against certain diseases?  The booster was necessary because the effect of the first shot didn’t last a lifetime.

The same holds true with anti-aging. You can’t just do something once, and then expect it to last forever. Time, pollutants and gravity take a toll on your skin and body. Periodically, you need some anti-aging energy boosters.

Keep wrinkles at bay and your energy level tank filled to the rim with these tips:

Get out of your house! You need fresh air and sunshine regularly. That doesn’t mean getting a suntan. Be smart and use a high number SPF sunscreen to avoid skin damage from ultraviolet rays. And don’t stay outdoors during the mid-afternoon hours when the sun is most powerful. Go out in the morning and late afternoon.

Reduce the heat inside your home. Keeping the temperature too warm causes the

Anti Aging Moisturizers – Creams versus Serums

By User ImageAdmin On July 12, 2008 NO COMMENTS

With the demand for anti-aging skin care products at an all time high, manufacturers are constantly evolving their methods of delivering dewy, youthful skin. Anti-aging creams are the standard – a hybrid formula based on the tried and true moisturizers.

The newer product is the serum, an over-the-counter variation on products that were initially used by aestheticians and dermatologists for advanced skin care. Now you can buy either type at prices ranging from department store to discount store levels.

Creams are soothing, rich and designed to provide the extra moisture that aging, sun exposure and environmental toxins steal from the skin over time. No longer the big generic jar on your grandmother’s dresser that went on the whole body from face to toes, today’s anti-aging creams are specially designed for the face and neck.

Creams also come in formulas that are suitable for dry, oily or combination skin types. Choosing a cream for

Sun Safety Action Steps

By User ImageAdmin On July 2, 2008 NO COMMENTS

July is UV Safety month: The UV Index predicts the strength of harmful solar rays. Check the UV Index on your weather forecast map – when you know how strong the sun’s rays will be, you can take steps to protect yourself and your family from overexposure to the sun.

Do Not Burn

Five or more sunburns doubles your risk of developing skin cancer.

Avoid Sun Tanning and Tanning Beds

UV light from tanning beds and the sun causes skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look like you’ve been in the sun, consider using a sunless self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.

Generously Apply Sunscreen

Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed skin using a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 that provides broad-spectrum protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

Wear Protective Clothing
