Skin Care for Women
Caring for women’s skin is definitely unique compared to children and men. Age is a major factor as women have different skin care needs as they age.
They say that we are what we eat. And for women, her physical appearance usually conveys what is going on in her body and health. The skin, the largest organ in the body, is a good indicator of health. Factors that affect our skin include poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle choices and living a stressful lifestyle. Also, bad habits such as smoking and consuming high fat, high-salt diets deprive the body of the important nutrients skin needs. Let’s look at major and specific issues concerning women when it comes to skin care.
Shaving – While men shave their faces, women shave other body parts. These body parts are particularly sensitive and skin irritation and cuts are major concerns.
Water retention – A major concern for women is water retention, as women retain more water compared to men. This makes the skin look and feel swollen and bloated. To prevent and control water retention, it is important to watch the amount of salt in their diet.
Skin treatments and procedures – Although undergoing skin treatments and procedures are now becoming more popular with men, women generally undergo more treatments and procedures. There always seems to be a new procedure and women are the primary target market. Some of these treatments include facial treatments, laser treatments, augmentations and dermabrasions. While some are non-invasive, it is important to think about the pros and cons before deciding to proceed with a procedure.
Hormones – Women sometimes have irregular hormones during specific times like pregnancy, menopause and during emotionally stressful times. These situations and conditions are unavoidable and difficult to control. In addition, every woman is unique, so each one’s needs and reactions may be different.
Pregnancy – Skin care
Pregnancy is a precious and special time for each mom-to-be. There are so many changes occurring and during pregnancy, the skin also needs special care.
First, it is important to be careful about all the products used. Make sure you read the labels and choose products that are formulated for pregnant women.
Second, because of hormonal changes, skin tends to produce more oil during pregnancy. This means that you may need to change your skin care products during this time. For example, you may need to use different toners or products that fight acne. Moisturizing is still extremely important as your skin expands (especially your belly) and adapts to the changes in your body. Don’t forget to care for your feet too, as they are carrying extra weight.
Last but not least, do not forget to protect yourself from the sun. Blemishes and pigmentations are more likely to occur because of hormonal changes. It is important not to forget sunscreen.
Menopause and Skin Care
Menopause is another significant period during a woman’s life. During menopause, a woman’s progesterone and estrogen levels change resulting to changes in the skin as it reacts. Some effects of menopause on the skin include dark spots, sagging skin, wrinkling and thinning. Skin also becomes drier as sebum production slows down. There are also instances when acne suddenly appears together with facial hair!
As always, protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. To prevent dry skin, try to take shorter and warmer baths and moisturize as much as you can. It is also recommended to add humidity into the air. During menopause, you will have to be more aware of skin discolorations and moles as they may be an indication of skin cancer.
